Some funguses are useful for human, like the yeast used in bread making; or the one used for yogurts. But mold is the bad cousin in the family; there are different types of mold and mold tests can help to its identification.
What is mold
Mold has a velvety-looking appearance. It grows on organic materials, especially in the presence of moisture, decomposition and dark environments. Damaging characteristics permanently affect any porous material that house them, bruising textiles and wooden surfaces, weakening the plant fibers found in the building materials of our homes and causing spoilage of stored food. Brown, blue, pink or black spots known as "foxing" on prints or drawings are, as well, the direct result of their presence. It is really harmful to the human being making people got allergies, skin problems and respiratory illnesses.
The silent hazard activity of mold to human beings as well as your goods impels us as professional service, to eliminate it as soon as it appears in the structure. However, properly mold treatment demands the accurate identification of it. Probably you have seen on T.V companies offering kits to perform mold tests that can be used at home. This method is a non-expensive option since hiring a mold specialist so early could lead to major investment of time and money. Any sample collected with a mold test kit is sent to a professional mold testing laboratory that will provide trustworthy results in short time.
But taking mold sample by yourself is risky. As we mentioned, mold is hazardous. And manipulating mold sample is a really endangering action. Mold has spores. When you collect the sample, these spores agitate and they might get into your respiratory system, onto your skin and into your eyes, triggering allergies or other diseases. So, instead of being exposed to that danger to save a couple of dimes prefer hiring the service of professionals that are experts in collecting the samples and the analysis of tests. We can provide the most accurate results under any given condition.
It is important our action as professionals in restoration because if we inspect in search of mold in your home or workplace and mold appears during the inspection, it is usually not necessary to perform any mold test. Instead, we can move on to the mold removal stage. Nevertheless, if we have not been able to find mold, but still think a mold problem is present, or if we have found some mold, but we think there is more hidden or toxic mold may appear, then it is a good idea to perform a mold testing.
Types of mold tests
A mold test offers an approximate value of the amount of mold particles in a given area during a given time. It should be borne in mind that the amount of mold spores fluctuates in time and from place to place. Because of this, we strongly recommend to perform tests at different times and in different places of your house. This way, you will get an exhaustive and detailed picture of the mold problem in your home.
There are four main types of tests that we are able to perform:
- Air test.
- Test on surfaces.
- Massive tests
- Mold cultivation test
It is recommended to perform all four types of tests since each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.
With the air test, we analyze the concentration of mold spores in the air of your home, workplace or building. We collect air samples and they are carefully examined under a microscope. The air test will let us know if your place means a serious mold problem, even if no mold can be seen growing. It is always important to keep in mind that spore concentration in the air might vary dramatically in a matter of short time, providing ambiguous results, for this reason, it is recommended to perform multiple air tests.
Test on surfaces
This test consists of taking samples from different surfaces in the house, building or workplace to find the amount of mold and spores deposited around the house. A swab, lifting tapes or other methods are used to collect the samples and after finishing the process, the samples are meticulously observed in the lab. The accuracy of test on surfaces may vary since mold growth and spores are not distributed evenly across surfaces at home, their accumulation may change over time. This kind of test is only advisable for surfaces diagnostic because it is not possible to identify the exact concentration of mold spores in the air with it.
This test is carried out on the material removed from structures. Pieces of damaged material or apparently damaged material are collected from around the house, building or structure. After, that material is taken to a laboratory to study mold particles of the material using a microscope. With massive tests we can tell you if a mold problem is present or not. It can also provide an idea of the concentration of mold particles in the structure.
Mold cultivation test
For cultivation tests the time of diagnostic is a little bit longer. Those tests are made by taking a sample of the mold particles from the house and cultivating that sample in a laboratory until they become large mold colonies. This methodology facilitates the identification of mold species infecting your home.
To identify the particles of mold, they must be alive. But do not think dead mold is not harmful: dead mold particles in the house still cause allergies and health problems. To find out both, live and dead mold in a house other tests may be applied.
Restoration Control advice you to conduct mold tests to get ulterior proper mold treatment. Do not risk yourself or family.
